Tilia species - Limes
Tilia cordata x platyphyllos = T. x europaea - Common Lime. This is one of the tallest common broad-leaved trees and sends off dense shoots and suckers from the base of the trunk. It has large rather flimsy leaves which have buff hairs on the underside between the veins. The flowers and fruit hang down below the bracts.
Tilia cordata - Small-leaved Lime has smaller leaves than x europaea with rufous tufts between the veins on the underside. It rarely suckers from the base and usually the fruits are held above the bracts.
Tilia cordata x dasystyla = T. x euchlora - Caucasian Lime are common in parks. They have distinctive darker, shiny leaves with pale teeth. Underneath they have large tufts of brown hair in the leaf axils. Unlike the leaves of the other limes shown, the shiny leaves deter aphids.
