Fragaria vesca - Wild Strawberry
Fragaria vesca Wild Strawberry. This can be differentiated from the Potentilla sterilis Barren Strawberry by:
- The sepals are visible between the petals,
- the leaves are dull, and
- the final tooth is shorter than the two on either side.
Fragaria ananassa Garden Strawberry is larger than the wild strawberry with many more stolons. It also has a more rounded or obtuse base to the leaf, rather than the acute base of F. vesca. The sepals are oppressed more than in F. vesca. and the fruit is more than 15mm across. The seeds are sunken into the ripe fruit, whereas in F. vesca they are above the surface of the ripe fruit.
Potentilla sterilis Barren Strawberry - this is included here from the Potentilla page, just for comparison.
