Ribes species - Currants and Gooseberries
Ribes nigrum - Black Currant. Has scented leaves. The black fruit is shiny with no bloom.
Ribes rubrum - Red Currant. Has unscented leaves with more pointed main lobes than R. nigrum. The fruit is red.
Ribes sanguineum - Flowering Currant. There are no spines. The leaves are scented. The flowers are in long racemes and pink to red. The fruit is blackish purple with a white bloom.
Ribes alpinum - Mountain Currant.
Ribes uva-crispa - Gooseberry Has spiny stems. Leaves are greenish yellow, unscented and usually hairy. The flowers are in groups of 2 - 3 greenish-yellow or red tinged and hairy.
