The flowers are much brighter than Calluna vulgaris Heather. They are red-purple. The leaves are darker green with in-rolled edges in whorls of three.

This is an established garden escape in Lanarkshire. The leaves are in whorls of four. The flowers are distinctive amongst heather as they have chocolate brown anthers prominently protruding from the flower.
It's been described as "Britain's commonest rare plant" as it is native in Cornwall and is very plentiful in the Lizard.
