Sisymbrium species - Hedge Mustards
Sisymbrium have simple hairs and thin seed pods.
Sisymbrium officinale - Hedge Mustard
This is a common weed of pavements and roadsides.
Sisymbrium orientale - Eastern Rocket
It is different from the commoner Hedge Mustard Sisymbrium offinicale because the seed pods are much longer, slightly hairy when young and held away from the stem. The leaves are also not as regularly pinnate.
Sisymbrium altissimum Tall Rocket is also found in Lanarkshire
Differs from Sisymbrium officinale in:
- Much finer, and more divided leaves with end lobe not markedly enlarged. Even the stem leaves have 2-5 pairs of fine lobes.
- Petals larger 7-10mm, sepals are toothed at the tip and held away petals
- Spreading cylindrical fruits 60 - 100mm long held at 45° to stem. They are hairless
